Sterling Clifford brings 14 years of media and political experience in some of the largest media markets in the country, as well as experience with national and international press.
Sterling started his career as a sportswriter before shifting to politics in 2003. Sterling was a speechwriter and press secretary for Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith, a senior advisor for the Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon and Public Affairs Director for the Baltimore Police Department.
In 2010, Sterling moved to California to join Jerry Brown’s campaign for an historic third term as Governor of California. As Communications Director, he managed media engagement and strategy, served as the only on-the-record spokesperson for a campaign that won despite being outspent by a record $140 million.
Sterling served as Communications Director for Jay Inslee for Washington where he helped Inslee defeat Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna, who many observers considered the best Republican candidate in recent Washington history. In addition to developing and executing Inslee’s earned media strategy, Sterling led debate preparations, speech writing and messaging throughout the campaign.
As a consultant, Sterling has provided strategic counsel for municipal, federal and statewide candidates across the country and has helped private sector clients develop effective public and government relations campaigns. He has extensive experience in social media campaigns, crisis communications and paid media strategy.
